Final Grade Calculator
Enter your current grade, the grade you want in the course, and how much the final is worth to find the score you need.
To find the score you need on a final, account for how much the final is worth. Needed score = (target โ current ร (1 โ final weight)) รท final weight. If you have an 88% going in, want a 90% overall, and the final is worth 25%, you need (90 โ 88 ร 0.75) รท 0.25 = 96% on the final.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter three values: your current grade in the course (the percentage you have earned so far, before the final), the target grade you want to end up with, and the weight of the final exam as a percentage of the total course grade. The calculator tells you the exact score you need on the final to reach your target.
Your current grade is whatever your gradebook shows now, excluding the final. The final's weight is stated in the syllabus โ commonly 20%, 25% or 30%. If your current grade already blends in everything except the final, this calculation is exact.
How the Calculation Works
Your final course grade is a weighted average: the work you have done counts for (1 โ w) of the grade and the final counts for w, where w is the final's weight as a fraction. Setting that weighted average equal to your target and solving for the final score gives: needed = (target โ current ร (1 โ w)) รท w. In words, subtract the guaranteed contribution of your existing work from the target, then scale up by the final's weight to find what the final alone must deliver.
Worked Example
You currently have 88% in the course, you want a 90% overall, and the final is worth 25% (so w = 0.25 and existing work counts for 75%). Needed = (90 โ 88 ร 0.75) รท 0.25 = (90 โ 66) รท 0.25 = 24 รท 0.25 = 96%. So you would need to score 96% on the final. If the final were worth 40% instead, the same target would need (90 โ 88 ร 0.60) รท 0.40 = (90 โ 52.8) รท 0.40 = 93%.
What the Result Means
The result is the minimum score the final must earn to reach your target. If it comes out above 100%, the target is not reachable through the final alone โ you would need extra credit or a lower target. If it comes out at or below 0%, you have already locked in the target and could score zero and still make it. A heavier final weight makes a struggling grade easier to rescue but also makes a strong grade easier to lose, which is worth knowing before exam day.
Assumptions and Limitations
This assumes your course grade is a simple weighted average of 'everything so far' and 'the final,' which is the most common setup. It does not model complex schemes like dropping the lowest quiz, separate weighted categories that the final is part of, or curves applied after the fact โ for category-weighted courses, use a weighted grade calculator. It also assumes your current grade already reflects all non-final work. Confirm your syllabus's exact grading scheme for high-stakes planning.
When to Use a Final Grade Calculator
Students use this to find the score they need on the final to reach a target course grade. Run it before exam week to set a realistic goal and prioritize studying. Enter your current grade, target, and the final's weight to see the score required.

How do I calculate what I need on my final?
Use needed = (target โ current ร (1 โ w)) รท w, where w is the final's weight as a fraction. Subtract your existing work's contribution from the target, then divide by the final's weight.
What if the calculator says I need more than 100%?
Your target is out of reach through the final alone. You would need extra credit, a grade adjustment, or to accept a lower final course grade. Recalculate with a realistic target.
What does it mean if I need a negative score?
You have already secured your target grade. Even a score of 0% on the final would leave you at or above the target, though most students still aim to do well.
How do I find my current grade to enter?
Use the percentage your gradebook or syllabus shows for all work completed so far, excluding the final. If grades are in categories, compute the weighted average of those categories first.
Does a heavier final make my target easier or harder?
Both. A heavier final gives you more room to raise a low grade, but it also means a poor final can pull a strong grade down more. The weight cuts both ways.
Can I use this for a project or paper instead of a final?
Yes. The 'final' can be any remaining assessment. Enter its weight in place of the final exam's weight and the same formula finds the score you need on it.
