How to Use This Calculator

Set the length of the boards or panels you plan to buy and the height the wainscoting will rise up the wall. The result shows the linear feet to cover, the number of boards to buy, and the square footage of the panelled band for estimating sheet material or paint.
How the Calculation Works
The perimeter of a rectangular room is twice the sum of its length and width. Subtracting the width of doorways gives the linear feet of wall that actually needs wainscoting.
Dividing that linear footage by the length of each board, and rounding up, gives the number of boards. Multiplying the linear feet by the wainscoting height gives the area of the panelled band, useful when the wainscoting is a continuous surface such as beadboard sheet rather than individual boards.

Worked Example
A room 12 feet by 10 feet has a perimeter of 2 ร (12 + 10) = 44 feet. Subtract a single 3-foot doorway: 44 โ 3 = 41 linear feet to cover.
Using 8-foot boards, you need 41 รท 8 = 5.1, rounded up to 6 boards. At a wainscoting height of 3 feet, the panelled band is 41 ร 3 = 123 square feet.
Assumptions and Limitations
- Assumes a rectangular room; add wall runs manually for L-shaped or bay rooms
- Board count rounds up to whole boards and does not add extra for waste โ add 10% for cuts and mistakes
- The panel area is the wainscoting band only, not the full wall height
- Cap rail, base and trim are separate โ the linear feet figure sizes them too

How do I measure a room for wainscoting?

How high should wainscoting be?
