Lunch Break Calculator
Enter your start time, hours to work and unpaid break to find when you can clock out.
To find your clock-out time, add the hours you need to work plus your unpaid break to your start time. Starting at 9:00 AM, working 8 hours with a 30-minute unpaid lunch means you leave at 9:00 + 8:00 + 0:30 = 5:30 PM. The break adds to the workday because it is unpaid time on site.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter the time you start work, the number of paid hours you need to work, and the length of your unpaid break in minutes โ 30 is pre-filled for the classic half-hour lunch. The calculator returns the time you can clock out.
Because an unpaid break is time at work that doesn't count toward your hours, it pushes your finish time later. A paid break, by contrast, would not, so only enter breaks that are unpaid.
How the Calculation Works
The calculator converts your start time to minutes, adds the paid working hours (converted to minutes) and the unpaid break, then converts back to a clock time. If the total runs past midnight, it wraps around and notes the next day.
The key idea is that unpaid break time extends your total time on site: to be paid for 8 hours with a 30-minute unpaid lunch, you must be present for 8 hours and 30 minutes.
clock-out = start + hours worked + unpaid break
Worked Example
Start at 9:00 AM, work 8 hours, take a 30-minute unpaid lunch. Add 8 hours to get 5:00 PM, then add the 30-minute break to get 5:30 PM.
So you clock out at 5:30 PM. Without the unpaid break you'd leave at 5:00 PM, but the lunch adds half an hour to the day.
Assumptions and Limitations
- Adds the unpaid break to the workday; don't include paid breaks
- Hours to work are the paid hours required
- Times crossing midnight are handled and flagged as next day
- Local labor rules on required breaks are not applied

How do I calculate my clock-out time with a lunch break?
Add your paid hours and your unpaid break to your start time. Starting at 9:00 AM with 8 hours and a 30-minute lunch, you clock out at 5:30 PM.
Does an unpaid lunch make my day longer?
Yes. Because unpaid break time doesn't count toward your paid hours, you must stay that much longer. A 30-minute unpaid lunch adds 30 minutes to your time on site.
What if my break is paid?
Then it doesn't extend your day โ set the break to 0 in this tool. Only unpaid breaks push your clock-out time later.
How long should a lunch break be?
Thirty minutes is the most common unpaid lunch, though it varies by employer and jurisdiction. Enter whatever your workplace uses; local labor laws may set minimums.
Does this handle overnight shifts?
Yes. If the clock-out time falls after midnight, the calculator wraps to the correct time and notes that it's the next day.
