How the Calculation Works
Fahrenheit and Celsius convert with the standard formula: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, and the reverse °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. The UK gas mark scale is linear above gas mark 1: gas mark 1 is 275°F (about 140°C), and each successive mark adds 25°F, so °F = 250 + 25 × mark. The tool converts your input to Fahrenheit first, then derives Celsius and the gas mark from it.
Worked Example
A recipe calls for a 350°F oven. Celsius = (350 − 32) × 5/9 = 318 × 0.5556 = 176.7°C, which rounds to about 177°C (commonly written as 180°C in recipes). Gas mark = (350 − 250) ÷ 25 = 4. So 350°F ≈ 177°C ≈ gas mark 4 — one of the most common baking temperatures. Similarly, 400°F works out to about 204°C and gas mark 6.
What the Result Means
The three values are equivalent oven settings. In practice, cooks often round to the nearest convenient dial marking — 177°C is usually set as 180°C, for instance — and ovens vary enough that a few degrees rarely matters. Gas marks come in whole steps of 25°F, so a Fahrenheit value between marks maps to a fractional gas mark; round to the nearest whole mark your oven offers. An oven thermometer is worth using if precise temperature matters, since dial settings are often off.
Assumptions and Limitations
The gas mark scale used here is the standard UK convention (mark 1 = 275°F, +25°F per mark); a few charts round the Celsius equivalents slightly differently. Fan (convection) ovens run hotter than the dial suggests, so many recipes advise reducing a fan oven by about 20°C (about 25–50°F) from the conventional temperature — this converter shows the direct equivalent and does not apply a fan adjustment. Real ovens also vary from their dials, so treat the result as the target setting.
