How the Calculation Works
The tip is a percentage of the bill: tip = bill × (tip% ÷ 100). The grand total is simply the bill plus the tip. To split the bill evenly, divide the grand total by the number of people. Splitting the total (rather than splitting the bill and the tip separately) guarantees the per-person amounts add back up to exactly what is owed.
Worked Example
Suppose your bill is $80.00, you want to tip 18%, and four people are splitting it. Tip = $80.00 × 18 ÷ 100 = $14.40. Total = $80.00 + $14.40 = $94.40. Per person = $94.40 ÷ 4 = $23.60. If you raised the tip to 20%, the tip would be $16.00, the total $96.00, and each share $24.00.
What the Result Means
The tip amount is what you add for service; the total is what leaves your account; the per-person figure is what to hand over or send when splitting. A quick mental check: 20% is one-fifth of the bill, so you can double the bill's first two digits (for a $80 bill, 20% ≈ $16), and 15% is halfway between 10% and 20%. Rounding the per-person amount up slightly is a common courtesy that also makes cash splits easier.
Assumptions and Limitations
This assumes an even split among everyone at the table; it does not handle itemized or unequal shares, where each person pays for what they ordered. Whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount is a personal choice — enter whichever bill figure you prefer. Some restaurants automatically add gratuity for large parties, so check the bill before adding a tip on top. Tipping norms also vary by country and service type.
